Job Summary

Based in the School of Metallurgy and Materials on the Edgbaston Campus, the postholder will contribute to the achievement of the School's research strategy by undertaking specified research activities within an established research programme, and to provide support in management of the project (Innovate UK), supplying industrial experience in laser processing and metallurgical characterisation. Candidates should be skilled in microstructural characterisation, using X-ray tomography, analytical SEM, TEM, and understand the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. The post will provide an excellent opportunity for early career researchers who wish to enhance their research and teaching skills. The candidate will be based at the Advanced Materials and Processing Lab (AMPLab).

The post holder will support process monitoring of selective laser melting; defect identification in metal additive manufacturing using selective laser melting and perform research on metal additive manufacturing using selective laser melting.

They will analyse and interpret research findings and results and plan, design and deliver the research activities of the project and to co-ordinate the research programme with the industrial sponsors of the project. They will also publish, and where appropriate, to present at international conferences, to patent results obtained from the research.

Key elements of the role include to design (and coordinate the manufacture of) samples to evaluate new process parameters; perform experiments on samples (e.g. microstructural characterisation using x-ray tomography, electron microscopy and mechanical testing), and analyse and interpret data. The postholder will apply knowledge in a way which develops processes suitable for application in industry. And disseminate research findings for industrial reports, patent applications, journal and conference publications, research seminars etc. They will also collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, patent search, and research interviews and present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.

 

Main Duties
To work, as a key personnel, to achieve the objectives in the project and deliver the deliverables committed by the School/University.
To develop research plans for the research project, with assistance of the project supervisor, to address the project objectives and complete the required outputs.
To design (and coordinate the manufacture of) samples to evaluate new process parameters.
To perform experiments on samples (e.g. microstructural characterisation using x-ray tomography, electron microscopy and mechanical testing), analyse and interpret data.
To apply knowledge in a way which develops processes suitable for application in industry.
To disseminate research findings for industrial reports, patent applications, journal and conference publications, research seminars etc
To collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, patent search, and research interviews
To present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
To develop research plans for the research project, with assistance of the project supervisor, to address the project objectives and complete the required outputs.
To design (and coordinate the manufacture of) samples to evaluate new process parameters.
To perform experiments on samples (e.g. microstructural characterisation using electron microscopy and mechanical testing), analyse and interpret data.
To apply knowledge in a way which develops processes suitable for application in industry.
To disseminate research findings for industrial reports, patent applications, journal and conference publications, research seminars etc
To prepare teaching materials and assist in the delivery of educational programmes
Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate
Contribute to the planning of research projects
Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
Plan and manage the project and its funding on daily basis
Contribute to the planning of potential industrial and government projects
Co-ordinate own work with the sponsors of the work to allow smooth operation of the project in terms of delivering of the overall objectives of the project
Attend and contribute to project meetings, provide support and advice to the sponsoring company as a material and processing expert.
To design various experiments on own initiative.
Decide in consultation with the principal academic investigator and industrial contact as appropriate, on the most appropriate way of undertaking the specified research activities
Decide in consultation with the principal academic investigator and industrial contact as appropriate how to analyse and interpret the data from the specified research activities
Liaise with external collaborators on the research, where appropriate
Give presentations and/or contribute to presentations at national and/or international conferences
Liaise and collaborate with colleagues working in the similar area.
Liaise with technicians to allow smooth operation of the facilities, such as HIP, mechanical testing facilities, heat treatment furnace, SEM, etc


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required

Hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD or EngD in one of the following subjects: Metallurgy and Material Science, Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience)
Experience in developing and conducting laboratory based testing, including small or large-scale physical model testing in geotechnical and/or structural engineering
Significant research experience in Selective Laser Melting and/or Direct Laser Deposition of Metallic Systems
Demonstrable CAD Modelling experience
Skilled in microstructural characterisation using analytical X-ray tomography, SEM, EBSD, TEM and understand the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties.
Proven experience in working with industry
Demonstrable capability in delivering world-class or international-leading research
Ability to communicate complex information clearly
Proven ability to work in a team, including other researchers, academics and technicians
Experience of coordinating own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
Good organisational and professional skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
Experience using programming software package on Matlab or python would be advantageous.
