Researcher Marine Proteins
Chalmers University of Technology Department of Biology and Biological Engineering

Researcher Marine Proteins

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering was founded January 1 2015, and started off with high ambitions. The aim was to grow and become a leading center of innovation by combining the latest research in life sciences with biochemistry. And the department got off to flying start. In its first year, the numbers for publication, citation and external funding have been excellent.

The department consists of four divisions, each conducting outstanding research in the areas of industrial biotechnology, systems biology, chemical biology and food science. The overall goal is to help build a sustainable society and improve human health.

Nearly 200 people from 20 countries are currently working at the department. The working environment is characterized by respect, cooperation, responsibility, creativity and job satisfaction.

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering has summarized its mission in four points:
• To be an attractive environment for top-level researchers in biological engineering
• To deliver top-level research results and innovative solutions for use in a sustainable society
• To offer excellent education that develops creative engineers and scientists
• To be a major contributor to international visibility of Chalmers

Information about the department and the research

The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering is aiming at bridging cutting edge life science research with biochemical engineering, in order to emerge as the leading innovation center in the region. The research has broad applications in areas of health and industrial production of e.g. fine chemicals, food and energy. An important mission is to drive the development of novel and improved tools to study effects on a cellular level through systems' biology analysis and modeling tools, metabolic engineering and bioimaging. Powerful experimental platforms are avialable such as well equipped fermenters, analytical instruments and laser based microscopy. The department offers highly qualified education for engineering students within the area of bioengineering. It is furthermore collaborating in broad, interdiciplinary national and international networks within academia and the industry.

The division of Food and Nutrition Science is one of four research divisions at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering. Food and Nutrition Science is one of the leading units in the area in Sweden with particular strengths in nutritional and computational metabolomics, dietary biomarkers, micronutrient metal nutrition, nutritional immunology, marine food science and nutrition as well as food by-product biorefining. The division has a wide range of modern analytical equipment for chromatography coupled with mass spectrometery, an in vitro human cell laboratory, and a microbiology laboratory. The division focuses on nutritional solutions for health and disease prevention by studies on the molecular, cellular, and whole-body level. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food.

Job description
The position involves participation in research, teaching and utilization activities. The field of research is eco-innovative utilization of marine resources for production of sustainable and healthy foods as well as food packaging materials, with the the main focus being on marine proteins. Initially, the research will be conducted within a series of ongoing national and European projects on valorization of marine side streams to develop sustainable value chains for these raw materials. Increase in the technology rediness level (TRL) for valorization techniques such as the pH-shift process will here be fundamental. Also, it is expected that the researcher will contribute to a broadening of the analysis platform for marine proteins at the FNS division. The researcher should closely collaborate with different national and international partners from industry and academia through ongoing projects, and will participate in teaching as well as supervision of PhD and MSc students in line with the title of the postion. The researcher should also actively apply for external funding for continuation of the research in line with the described field.

Position summary
The position is a full-time permanent employment. Teaching will consitute 5-10% of time.

A PhD in Food science, Seafood science or similar and at least 2 years of post doctoral research experience in the relevant field is required. Further, a self-motivated individual with documented ability to successfully conduct research and work independently is desirable. The candidate should have the ability to combine creativity and experimental research together with a focus on applications to generate industry-ready solutions leading to commercialization. A strong research profile as proven by publications in internationally leading journals, graduate and postgraduate student supervision as well grant application expertise is highly recommended. Also, good knowledge in marine proteins and the relationship between their chemistry, functionality and product forming capacity at both micro- amd macro-level is expected. In terms of experimental skills, experience from working with pH-shift processing of fish side streams and molecular biological techniques such as SDS-PAGE, chromatographic techniques like LC-MS, GC-MS and SEC, rheological techniques as well as spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR is desired.

The candidate should also have strong communication skills in written and oral, good ability to work in teams, and experience from collaborating with industry.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
