Rudolf Mössbauer Tenure Track Assistant Professorships


TUM is the first German university to practice a graduated, performance-based career and career system. Based on the best international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM FACULTY TENURE TRACK offers stringently quality-oriented career options for excellent young scientists: from appointment as Assistant Professor to permanent position as Associate Professor to Full Professor. At the TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS), up to five Rudolf Mössbauer Tenure Track Assistant professorships are to be filled at grade W2 on 01.10.2020. The professorship is funded by the Bund-Länder-Program for the Promotion of Young Scientists (Tenure Track Program).


As part of its Fellowship program, the TUM-IAS awards the Rudolf Mößbauer Professorships to excellent junior researchers who have the potential to develop an internationally recognized research profile at TUM. Applications for the following research topics within the TUM research portfolio are possible (potentially included faculty (s) listed in brackets):

- Technology Design (Faculty of Architecture)

- Data Science and Machine Learning in Chemistry (Faculty of Chemistry / Faculty of Computer Science)

- Data Science and Machine Learning in Engineering (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering)

- Data Science and Machine Learning in Health (Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences / Faculty of Computer Science)

- Functional Nanomaterials (Faculty of Chemistry)

- Electron Micro scopy (Faculty of Chemistry / Faculty of Physics)

- Secure Connected Systems (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology / Faculty of Computer Science)

- Aerospace Medicine (Faculty of Aerospace and Geodesy / Faculty of Medicine)

The position as Tenure Track Assistant Professor is limited to 6 years. If it is evaluated positively last year, it will be converted into an open-ended position as Associate Professor (WG3). In exceptional cases, a tenure evaluation is possible after only 3 years. These exceptions must be justified by the extraordinary scientific achievements of the candidate and his contribution to the strengthening of the research profile of the university. The regulations of the "TUM appointment and career system" ( ) apply.

Applicants have already developed a promising research profile during their time as a postdoc and have the pedagogical as well as personal qualifications to serve as professors. Substantial international experience is a prerequisite for a successful application. Family times are taken into account.

Candidates are expected to establish an independent research program; For this they receive an attractive initial equipment. Likewise expected is a special pedagogical qualification and a high commitment in the academic teaching, both in the own field of study and in the basic general subjects of the faculties as well as in the teaching for students of other faculties.

According to the employment conditions for professors at the universities of the Free State of Bavaria, a university degree or a recognized university degree, pedagogical qualification, doctorate and habilitation or proof of equivalent scientific achievements are required (Art. 7 and 10 Abs. 3 BayHSchPG).
