Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis

The Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) has a world standard laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentations and techniques in electron and X-ray microscopy and analysis. The Centre has a wide range of cutting edge instruments and techniques including, conventional and cryo electron microscopes, Cs corrected S/TEM, X-ray analysis instrumentation, electron based nano-fabrication tools as well sample preparation facilities for material and life science and data processing workflows.

CMM is a leading facility for life sciences electron microscopy which houses Australia’s first JEOL CryoARM 300 and CryoARM 200 microscopes, a cryo-FIBSEM FEI Scios and a dedicated suite of cryo-preparation tools as well a suite of standard EM equipment.

The Centre provides leading edge capability in microstructural analysis to the staff and students across a broad range of disciplines at the University of Queensland.

The Centre’s strengths lie in training clients in relevant techniques and in solving characterisation problems relevant to a wide range of industrial, environmental and biological processes.

Information about the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis may be accessed on the Centre’s web site at https://cmm.centre.uq.edu.au/home

About This Opportunity

You will be responsible to manage, plan, maintain and operate the cryo transmission electron microscopes and cryo FIB/SEM, which are located in the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis (CMM) in a small team. The role involves a number of aspects including the training of new users in the proper and effective usage of the instrumentation, in the preparation of sample specimens for cryo-electron microscopy; the production of high-quality images and the development of new workflows for single-particle reconstruction and cryo-electron tomography. You will develop new workflows and protocols for cryo TEM tomography and CLEM and analytical methods related to modern structural biology challenges. In addition, aiding clients in experimental design and in the interpretation of high-quality data will be a highly significant aspect of the position.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.
