Those who are appointed to this prestigious specialisation will be expected to successfully drive educational excellence within the university’s teaching and learning communities.

The role of Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor / Professor reports to the Head of School and the ADA Associate Dean Indigenous with no direct reports. The role is available as one 0.4 FTE position (two days per week on average) or as two 0.2 FTE positions (one day per week on average), the distribution of these hours are negotiable. This position is being offered as either a Senior Lecturer (Level C), Associate Professor (Level D) or Professor (Level E) appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only. UNSW has obtained an exemption under section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) to designate and recruit professional and academic positions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons only, to fulfil UNSW’s goal of a representative workforce rate.


Specific accountabilities for this role include (but are not limited to):

  • Coordinate and lead courses, tutorials, studio, field visits and/or other relevant classes in the disciplines of architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture (at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level as applicable)
  • Design and develop approaches to teaching and learning which prioritise Indigenous voices. Help shape students who reflect and engage deeply with the process of unlearning and relearning (decolonising) and Indigenous Knowledge perspectives. Develop cultural awareness and the integration of values of Country within architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture in meaningful and appropriate ways
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning and cultivates a positive attitude towards teaching
  • Lead the design and development of learning activities and resources, assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments
  • Contribute to the design, development, review, and administration of curriculum, including academic quality assurance, both within and across architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture programs as well as with professional accreditation/organisation bodies such AIA and AILA.
  • Enhance and maintain the School of Built Environment’s links with industry, the professions and professional bodies, and communities as appropriate.

Who you are:

To be successful in this role you will have:

Selection Criteria for Level C

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant professional experience
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully coordinating and teaching architecture, interior architecture and/or landscape architecture at a university level
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a range of pedagogical approaches with the skill, experience and creativity to develop these over time

 Additional Criteria at Level D

  • Experience of course, program and curriculum development in higher education
  • Evidence of achievement in leading innovation, driving educational strategic initiatives and delivering exceptional student outcomes

Additional Criteria at level E

  • Demonstrated capacity to attract funding to support educational initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and influence others to drive change.
  • Demonstrated experience as an international leader and recognised authority as a subject matter expert with a breadth of disciplinary expertise (evidenced by e.g. keynote addresses and membership in internationally respected professional organisations, programme committees of prestigious conferences, solo or selected group exhibitions in high profile venues, internationally recognised practice and built works, etc)
