Senior Research Associate in Integrating Remote Sensing and Civil Engineering for Intelligent Infrastructure Monitoring
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Research Associate to work in investigating remote sensing big data for advanced monitoring of infrastructure.

Improvements in the spatial and time resolution of remotely sensed satellite data have led to a data deluge that can help to characterise the anthropogenic activities on the earth's surface, including the monitoring of structures in the built environment. To leverage this benefit, several challenges have to be addressed in investigations using such large datasets including, for example, the extraction of information from large scale datasets collected by multiple satellite sensors, which may have poor training sets to define the model for the analysis.

The successful candidate will lead a new programme to develop advanced signal processing methods to overcome these issues while guaranteeing the physical interpretability of the outcomes by working directly with civil engineers.

This position will be multidisciplinary, straddling both civil engineering and signal and image processing. We are looking for a strongly motivated person, who has an excellent academic record and potential, with analytical and problem-solving skills. The candidate should have technical expertise in several of the following fields: - computer science and programming; - image processing and statistics; - machine learning and/or deep learning; - remote sensing and big data analysis; - strong analytical skills to be applied to civil engineering.

Experience in or knowledge of civil-structural engineering applications in the infrastructure sector or InSAR and remote sensing would be a strong advantage.

The post will be based within the Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology in Division D of the Department of Engineering on the West Cambridge site.

Appointment is dependent on having a PhD and substantial relevant experience at a postdoctoral level

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
